How the modern kitchen has evolved

The modern kitchen has changed markedly over the years, with shifts in technology, materials and approach. The main stages are outlined below.

In the traditional and classic period, kitchens were designed in a traditional manner, with heavy wood and intricate detailing. Spaces were limited and functions were often limited too, which made them less practical. With the arrival of modern design, advances in technology and developments in materials manufacturing, the modern kitchen emerged with simple, clean designs. Materials such as stainless steel and glass began to appear, and the emphasis moved to function and technical improvement.

As technology advanced, smart appliances and control systems turned kitchens into more intelligent environments, from remotely controlled refrigerators to smart ovens and hobs, and kitchen function improved considerably. New materials followed, such as quartz, Corian and synthetic resins, offering an elegant appearance and easy maintenance, while advanced manufacturing techniques made new and inventive forms of furniture and fittings possible.

With growing environmental awareness, modern kitchens began to focus on sustainability and eco-friendly materials, which led to greater use of recycled materials and the application of environmental design principles. In recent years the focus has shifted to integrating the kitchen with the other living spaces in the home, meaning open, flowing kitchens that let family and guests interact while cooking and eating.

L-shaped kitchens

L-shaped kitchens are a popular layout and a favourite for many people. The kitchen components are arranged along two walls that meet at a right angle to form the letter L. The corners are used to provide extra storage and enough worktop space, and facilities such as the oven, refrigerator and sink can be placed along the two walls.

U-shaped modern kitchens

The U-shaped layout is one of the most widely used and popular kitchen designs. The components are arranged along three connected walls that form the letter U. This layout gives a generous, efficient work area, and facilities can be distributed across all three walls, allowing the different activities in the kitchen to flow smoothly.

G-shaped modern kitchens

The G-shaped layout is similar to the U-shape but adds an extra strip at the corner, forming the letter G. This layout provides additional storage and work space, and the extra strip can serve as an eating or breakfast area, or even as an additional preparation zone.

Single-wall modern kitchens

This layout places all the components and facilities along a single wall. It is ideal for small kitchens, or for open-plan designs where the kitchen is combined with other areas of the home. The space can also be tailored individually to the user's needs.

Galley kitchens

The galley kitchen is a layout inspired by the kitchens found on ships. The components are arranged along two facing walls, so the kitchen forms a long, narrow corridor and the space is used efficiently. In a modern kitchen, facilities and storage units can be distributed along both sides of the corridor so that the different tasks flow smoothly.

Kitchens with a central island

In this layout an island is placed in the middle of the kitchen, providing an additional work area and storage. The island can include facilities such as a sink or hob, or even an eating area. Kitchens with a central island are common in large kitchens and give a wide, comfortable work space.

Butler's pantry kitchens

The butler's pantry kitchen is a luxurious, sophisticated layout with an additional room used to store food, utensils, cookware and extra appliances. A pantry offers excellent organisation and extra storage, and lets users keep the main kitchen tidy and well ordered.

Organisation

  • Organise your tools and cookware efficiently with smart storage such as wall-mounted shelves, deep drawers or internal cabinet organisers.
  • Make use of vertical space by installing tall storage units.
  • Choose a folding table or a bar table to save space when it is not in use.

Lighting

  • Use natural light as much as possible.
  • Add artificial lighting under the cabinets, above the worktop or inside the cabinets.
  • Use energy-saving LED lamps.

Accessories

  • Use mirrors to reflect light and increase the sense of space.
  • Add small houseplants for a natural touch.
  • Use artwork or pictures to add a personal touch.

Colours

  • Use light colours in a modern kitchen, such as white, beige, light grey or light blue, to make the space feel larger.
  • Add touches of dark colour as edging or accessories to add depth and contrast.
